This is a different Cold Frosty Morning from the one I learned, but I like this one better. Crosstuning to AEAE makes tune easier to play.

My source recording (from the Digital Library of Appalachia) has him playing it in G#, actually. He does a good bit of droning on the first string (a D# in the recording, an E in my transcription) which, to me, suggests that he had has fiddle cross-tuned to G#D#G#D#. If you have a recording of him playing it differently, I'd love to hear it. I doubt he always played it the same way. Can you suggest a better way to render that trill?

This is close to the way Melvin played it, but I believe it's possible to get closer (particularly that trill he uses in the B-part is crucial to capturing his sound, and I always go for that effect when I play this tune. Also, I play it in G out of standard tuning. That's what I seemed to hear when I heard him play. Either way should work well, though.
